Travel Log: Angers (France)

Athens of the West

Discovery: Angers

When I arrived in Angers, I was really eager to explore all of the facets of this living city with a well-heeled reputation. As soon as I got there, I was struck by the city's duality. Trendy spots, innovative and striking architecture side-by-side with centuries-old buildings with a medieval air. What a pleasure it is to wander through Angers' narrow cobblestone streets!

During the day, stroll through the Jardin de la Roseraie (rose garden) or in the area around the Cathedral.

At night, the chateau takes on a whole different dimension! They say its owner had to cut its height in half (it's still the tallest fortified castle in France) so as not to upset Henri III. The official story is that they had to raze the chateau to prevent it from falling into the hands of the Protestants.

Also at night, it's interesting to walk along the Maine and the various bridges that span it. The pretty lighting will delight lovers (and others).

Finally, Angers is the host of many festivals and events. In September don't miss: the Accroche-Cœurs, a striking street theater festival that runs day and night, with its flock of musicians, actors, dancers, circus performers...
